Research Notes |
This is an eye speculum (also sometimes called an eyelid retractor). This little device was used to hold open the eyelids of a patient so the eye could be examined or operated upon. Some models functioned using tension, and other used a ratchet system, which allowed more control over how far apart the arms rested, and also allowed surgeons to operate using both hands. |
