Research Notes |
This patent medicine is only one of Dr. Pierce’s many remedies which he marketed and sold from the late 1860s into the 20th century. It was advertised as an alterative, meant to "cleanse the blood, tone the system, increase its nutrition, and establish a healthy condition." In earlier ads, it was specifically touted to cure consumption (tuberculosis) and other respiratory issues, as well as liver, blood, and skin conditions. Dr. Pierce was a master of advertising, using painted ads on barns, newspaper testimonials, and even publishing his own book, The People’s Common-Sense Medical Adviser, which contained general health advice, anatomical information, the medicinal properties of herbs, and uses for his many remedies. Dates for this bottle based on life of Dr. R. V. Pierce and the make of the bottle. |
