Research Notes |
These shears are named for German surgeon Friedrich von Esmarch, a pioneer of First Aid and creator of the famous and still widely used Esmarch bandage. These angled shears were used to cut open and remove plaster bandages from patients. This particular pair was owned by Dr. Alexander MacLaren, physician and coroner in London and Middlesex county in the late 1800s and early 1900s. |
