Research Notes |
This is an eye speculum (also sometimes called an eyelid retractor). This little wire device was used to hold open the eyelids of a patient so the eye could be examined or operated upon. This particular model functions through the tension in the wire, which forces the arms, and thus the patient’s eyelids, apart. Other models functioned using a ratchet system, which allowed more control over how far apart the arms rested, and also allowed surgeons to operate using both hands. |
