Army use? This set, used for weighing out portions of ingredients to create medicines, includes a drawer in the bottom in which are stored various coin-like weights. These measure based on the "apothecary system," in which a pound is 12 ounces, an ounce is 8 drachms, and a drachm is 60 grains. These scales first belonged to Dr. N.M. Woods (1819-1884) of Ireland, who moved to Bayfield, Ontario and operated a dispensary there in the mid to late 1800s. |
